Prince George contractors awarded for Highway 97 bridge work

YRB Vanderhoof also wins provincial road and bridge maintenance award

Formula Contractors Ltd. has been recognized for its work upgrading Highway 97 beyond the Pine Pass earlier this year.

The Prince George business was among the winners at the 2019 B.C. Highways Contractor Awards in Victoria on Friday (Dec. 6) and received an award of excellence for bridge and structures construction.

Formula was tasked with replacing the Bowlder Creek culvert on Highway 97 near Chetwynd with a 30.5-metre, two-lane bridge, and highway approaches, the Ministry of Transportation said.

The $6 million project was part of work to repair damages from the 2016 floods in the Peace region.

"The project also included stream channel stabilization work and environmental management," the ministry said in a news release.

"When the fish salvage was delayed, Formula Contractors worked extra hours to complete the under-span riprap to keep the girder delivery and placement on schedule. Working with the Moberly Lake Band as environmental observers, Formula Contractors and its partners completed this project on time and under budget."

This marks the second time in one week a Prince George-based company was recognized provincially.

Westcana Electric Inc. won two 2019 Builders Code Champion Awards as both Community Champion and Contractor of the Year.

YRB Vanderhoof was also put in the spotlight with the province's road and bridge maintenance award for upgrading nearly 1,500 km of roads and 41 bridges spanning the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako (RDBN), including those in Vanderhoof, Fort St. James, Fraser Lake, Fort Fraser and Endako.

A provincial statement commends YRB for its dedication to working through tough weather conditions to ensure safety of local residents.

"YRB Vanderhoof has shown great pride in the quality of the work it does and is exceptional at maintaining the highways and bridges in its service area, [...] YRB Vanderhoof is well known for its positive relationships with the community and for providing support through community engagement and volunteer work."
