Two Hart Judo Academy members showed off Prince George’s martial arts skills to the nation at the Canada Winter Games.
Kimiko Kamstra and Lochlan Gary Young fought their way onto the podium with pride, earning a combined four medals for Team British Columbia at the 2019 Games in Red Deer, Alberta.
They each earned an individual medal, plus a team medal in the judo competitions.
Kamstra made it to her weight class final (44kg) and the 18-year-old took home the silver medal after losing to Alberta’s Evelyn Beaton.
She helped B.C. win the silver medal as well in the team competition.
Young lost in his individual 73-kilogram semi-final, but prevailed in the bronze medal match over Kristopher Robert LaFrance of Prince Edward Island.
The 16-year-old was also a member of B.C. that won silver in the men’s team tournament.
On the slopes, Prince George snowboarder Colby Graham got onto the podium for the province.
The 17-year-old got over the finish line second place in the men’s snowboardcross final for the silver medal; Quebec’s Anthony Gervais-Marcoux won the gold.
B.C. was fourth in medals at the Canada Winter Games this year with 87 altogether, which included 30 gold, the third-most of any other province and the most ever at a Canada Winter Games, 28 silver, and 29 bronze.
Quebec came out on top with 146 medals; 65 gold, 41 silver, and 40 bronze.
At the 2015 Games here in Prince George, B.C. was the third best province with 88 medals.
