Prince George gymnast leaps into Nationals with strong provincial finish

Alia Wilson off to Canada’s capital in May, Kaylee Oberg best in B.C. in her category

First, she qualified to represent Team B.C. at the Western Canadian Championships, and now she’ll put her limits to the test on the National stage.

Prince George’s Alia Wilson is off to Ottawa next month after officially qualifying for the 2019 Canadian Championships in Artistic Gymnastics via B.C. Provincials that took place this past weekend.

The 16-year-old finished the highest level of difficulty, Junior Olympic (J.O.) 10, sixth overall after the two-day Coquitlam competition, which included a strong performance on the uneven bars and the balance beam.

Wilson beat out 11 other gymnasts to earn the Team B.C. jacket, which she will wear at the National Championships taking place May 21-26 at Carleton University in Ottawa.

She will first go to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan from April 25-27 for the Western Championships.

The Prince George Gymnastics Club also saw one of its members take home the title as provincial champion in her respective category.

Kaylee Oberg won the overall gold medal in the J.O. 7 division (1999-2003), placing first in uneven bars, balance beam, and vault.

She finished second in her fourth and final event, the floor exercise, but beat out 17 other gymnasts and narrowly escaped the silver medal by 0.55 points in the average scores.

The club earned a total of 10 medals from the B.C. Championships.

The other winners are as follows:
