The Prince George Humane Society has fought to live another month after raising more than $51,000.
On Aug. 26, the society announced they were in dire need of funding or else they would have to shut their doors within the next two months.
Board member Marina Crick said the rising costs of caring for animals and drop in donations left the society struggling financially.
Crick says the society cares for anywhere from 1,500 to 2,000 animals a year.
Change 4 Change was then launched with a goal of raising $30,000 to keep their doors open.
"Thanks to the generosity of the community, we are excited to announce our doors will be remaining open," Crick said at an announcement this morning (Oct. 1). "Our much-needed service will continue in the community."
After raising over $51,000, Crick says they still have donations coming in and still have cans that were asked to be filled yet to be returned.
"From the deepest of our heart, we would like to extend a tail-wagging thank you to this community," The society added in a release. "The community was amazing and super supportive."
They announced the development of a sustainability plan and a long-term fundraising strategy.
"We're going to roll that out as it goes," Crick said. "We just need to decide what we want to do and we can keep raising money. It's expensive to run a pet shelter, there's a lot of expenses."
They're going to be asking the community for anyone who is passionate about fundraising (and animals) to join a board they are creating for fundraising.
"We need some volunteers that have some experience with fundraising in the past," Crick added. "It's a full-time job for one person to do it alone. We really need some volunteers that would like to step forward and apply and help us with the long term."
