The Prince George Minor Hockey Association (PGMHA) aims to provide top-quality camps for its budding young stars as many days out of the year as possible and safely through a global pandemic.

The city may still be in the middle of winter, but players and parents are being encouraged to look ahead to the spring and the possibility of game-play scenarios, but only if the curve has been flattened in any way across B.C.

A month-long spring player development camp is currently open for registration by the PGMHA at all levels of competitive play, including AA and AAA, for young athletes to harness their abilities and improve on their skills.

One concept the organization hopes to incorporate is three-on-three games for each group.

However, if ViaSportBC guidelines remain in Phase Two by the time camps begin, the PGMHA explains it’ll be replaced with another development session.

Current B.C. public health orders, implemented by Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, are formally in place until Feb. 5, which includes a ban on travel for sports outside their own community.

BC Hockey remains in Phase Two, which means teams can only host non-contact practices and players must be three-metres apart on the playing surface.

Should the tide revert back to Phase Three, some games would be allowed as it did for many local teams back in early December.

For now, PGMHA’s spring camp plan is to have players on the ice three times a week.

Certified instructors are to provide focus on dynamic power skating, small-area play and a session using the Power Edge Pro reactive countering system.

Camps are open for the following divisions at a limit of 18 players per camp:

  • Under-11 Development (Male)
  • Under-13 Representative (Male and Female)
  • Under-15 BC Hockey AA/AAA (Male)
  • Under-18 BC Hockey AA/AAA (Male)
  • Under-15 to -18 Representative and BC Hockey AA/AAA (Female)

Three spots are also available for goaltenders per division at $60 each; cost for forwards and defence is $425 each.

The spring development camp runs from April 5 to May 1, with registration closing at 11:59 p.m. on March 15.
