A man is in custody after being suspected of stealing a vehicle and driving to Prince George.

RCMP spokesperson Cst. Jennifer Cooper says just before 5 a.m. this morning, Yukon RCMP contacted the Prince George Mounties to warn then a suspect that was driving a stolen vehicle was on his way toward the city.

Cooper says frontline officers tried to stop the driver on Highway 97 north near the weigh scales with a spike belt, but the driver was able to avoid the attempted stop.

Prince George RCMP Police Dog Services, Air Services and a Crisis Negotiator were called in to assist with tracking the vehicle.

Cooper says after deploying a number of police resources, officers were able to stop the suspect and take him into custody just before 9 a.m. this morning on Highway 97 south near Cottonwood Bridge.

“We are familiar with the suspect and his history with police and that made it a priority for us to apprehend him as quickly as possible," Cooper said in a statement.

"The suspect will remain in custody until he can attend court."
