Prince George, northern interior COVID-19 cases remain low as northwest B.C. continues to surge

While COVID-19 cases remain low and steady in Prince George and it's surrounding region, it's a whole different story for the northwest. 

According to the latest Geographic Distribution of COVID-19 by Health Service Delivery Area of Case Residents released by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), the northern interior recorded 40 cases from March 5-11, 2021. 

Northwest B.C. saw an alarming 173 cases, while the northeastern area tallied 33. 

From Feb. 28 to March 6, 2021, Prince George detected 31 cases of the virus.

Peace River North recorded 27 and Peace River South saw 19. 

From January 2020 to February 2021, the BCCDC says Prince George has seen 1,373 cases. The neighbouring Nechako region has tallied 291. 

As of this publication (March 13), Northern Health has recorded a total of 5,101 cases with 311 currently active. 

There are 14 people hospitalized, nine of which are in critical care or ICU. 

The BCCDC says 110 lives have been lost in the northern region from the virus.

Northern Health's school-exposure section explains the following:

• Contact tracing is initiated to determine how the individual was infected and who they were in close contact with
• We identify and notify close contacts who may be at an increased risk, and advise them to self-isolate and monitor for symptoms for 14 days
• Only Public Health can determine who is a close contact
  • Learning groups, friends or other connections may not be determined to be a close contact
• Public Health staff works closely with the school and school district throughout the case and contact management process to maintain close communication with the school community
