If you plan on going near a local river’s edge in the coming days, don’t!
That’s the message from BC River Forecast Centre, which has placed Prince George on flood watch and a high streamflow advisory due to a recent rise in water levels.
According to its latest 24-hour report, the provincial service states warmer temperatures and rainfall in the northern capital, and its neighbouring communities, have contributed to an increase in snowmelt rates and water flows.
This is leading to the prediction of flooding from specific tributaries in the region, including (in alphabetical order):
- Aleza Lake
- Bear Lake
- Chilako River
- Cottonwood River
- Giscome
- Pack River
- Salmon River
- Willow River
Environment Canada is predicting more rainfall leading up to the weekend that could contribute to greater snowmelt.
On Friday (April 30), there’s a 60 per cent chance of showers and a risk of a thunderstorm.
“Current hydrologic modelling is indicating the potential for flows in the two-year to five-year range, or higher, for most of the gauged rivers in the region,” says the BC River Forecast Centre in its update.
“[The Centre] continues to monitor the conditions and will provide updates as conditions warrant.”
Residents are being asked to stay away from fast-flowing waters and unstable riverbanks during the flood watch.
If you live near a tributary, a 72-hour emergency kit is recommended by the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George (RDFFG) in the event of a flood that forces home evacuations.
Other tips include:
- Keep important papers in watertight containers and have a record of your valuables in a safe place
- If flooding is likely in your area, pay attention to the local media for information
- Watch for warning signs:
- Increase in height and intensity of water flows
- Mudslides
- Debris in creeks
- Colour changes in water
- Leaning trees
- Know that banks of rivers and streams may be unstable and dangerous
- Keep a safe distance away from fast-flowing water, especially children
- Teach your children about flood safety
- Consider arrangements for your pets and any livestock
