Undefeated!

That’s how three secondary schools representing Prince George are doing down in the Lower Mainland at the 2019 Senior Boys’ Basketball provincials.

Duchess Park (3A), D.P. Todd (2A), and Cedars Christian (1A) all won the opening game of their respective tournament, advancing to today’s (March 7) quarterfinal matches.

This not only means that they have a shot at making the B.C. Championship Final, but they also can’t finish any worse than eighth place in the 16-team contests.

Conveniently, the Condors, Trojans, and Eagles will all tip-off at the exact same time tonight, 8:15 p.m. in Langley.

Before their tilts, let’s break down the Round of 16 from Wednesday:

CONDORS CRUSH CALEDONIA

Duchess Park (DPSS) is the fourth-ranked team in the B.C. 3A Boys Championships and proved why they were placed so high by dominating Caledonia Secondary by a score of 72-49.

The Condors were led by Caleb Lyons with 25 points against the Kermodes; he was 50% from field-goal range (8/16) and had two blocks in the contest.

DPSS starts provincials 1-0, sending their fellow northern B.C. counterpart from Terrace into the consolation bracket.

Condors will face G.W. Graham, the fifth-ranked team from Chilliwack, in the quarterfinals.

TROJANS BREAK PACIFIC ACADEMY

It didn’t take long for the number-two team in the B.C. 2A Boys Championship to have a good start to the tournament.

The D.P. Todd Trojans easily defeated the 15th-ranked Pacific Academy Breakers (Langley) 81-68 Wednesday morning.

Point guard Saagar Shergill scored 24 points, Randy Sandhu provided a lot of help on offense with a team-high seven assists, and five different players managed to bucket a three-pointer en route to victory.

The Trojans’ quarterfinal match will pin them against the George Elliot Secondary Coyotes, seventh in the province from Lake Country.

EAGLES DOWN DEVILS

Seventh-ranked Cedars Christian in the B.C. 1A Boys Championships had a lower-scoring game compared to the other two Prince George schools, but still managed to win by a significant margin.

The Eagles won 62-44 over the Pemberton Secondary Red Devils to get to their quarterfinal game.

Four players got into the double digits for points in lifting the Eagles to victory, including Joel Nelson (13), Evan Staves (12), Mitch Crosina (11), and Ben Wolitski (10).

Staves also recorded four steals, while Crosina was two-for-four (2/4) from around the arc.

Cedars will have a bit of a tougher tilt tonight playing Kelowna Christian, ranked number-two in B.C., who annihilated Gold River (Vancouver Island) in their first game, 100-28.

They were only one of two teams out of all three divisions to reach triple-digit points on Day One.
