There’s a successful photographer in Prince George that left her full-time day job and bravely made the big slide into making it on her own.
Right from the start, Lauren Verity’s photography lifted up those who seemed to be struggling with body image.
She had worked at a fertility clinic during her last career and shared that she’d been through fertility treatments herself and it really messed with her body and she saw it do the same to others at the clinic. So when she decided photography was going to be her career, she knew she could help women feel better about their appearance.
“You gain so much weight on fertility treatments,” Verity said whose company is Mountain + Mist Photography. “And I saw so many people feeling horrible about themselves – you witness a lot of patients fighting with their partners as well, which is really upsetting.”
There was a rather explosive start to her career as her life changed suddenly.
When her fertility treatments were finally successful, Verity found herself quite unexpectedly a single-mom-to-be at just three weeks pregnant.
“Through my whole pregnancy my business really blew up because I was putting everything into it,” Verity said. “People were following my story.”
And they became invested in Verity’s new life adventure, she added.
“I put my story out there and I started hearing from people who had gone through similar things with weight gain and just doing these kinds of photos made them feel better because you’re seeing yourself through somebody else’s eyes, that way you’re not so focused on the weight but rather looking and feeling your best,” Verity explained.
“It felt like they were growing with me and now three years later people are still messaging me saying ‘oh, I’ve been following your story right from the very beginning' so it’s been really cool to see people grow with me from day one.”
For her sessions, Verity asks her clients to come to their booking with clean hair and no makeup on and then the magic happens, including professional hair and makeup artists who glam up the client as much as they’d like. There’s also a chance to borrow from the client closet, because as Verity has figured out, it can be hard to find lovely lingerie in Prince George.
Verity also took a more daring plunge by expanding her photography into couple’s boudoir.
“At first I had people ask me if I did couple’s boudoir and I always said no,” Verity said. “Then in early 2021 I did a model call for a couple’s lifestyle shoot and it was very comfy cozy and it got a lot of good response and that’s when I started doing couple’s boudoir and set out clear boundaries right away. It was nerve-wracking starting couples but it’s worked out really well.”
Right now she’s so busy she’s booking as far into the future as April.
