The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43 hosted their annual Remembrance Day ceremony on Thursday morning at the cenotaph in Veterans Plaza in front of City Hall. Memorial wreaths were placed on the cenotaph from various dignitaries and representatives including three Silver Cross Mothers, Michelle Tott (who was accompanied by husband Craig and daughter Delaney), Lorraine Matters (who was accompanied by niece Patty Saario), and Colleen Fitzpatrick (who was accompanied by husband Jim).
2021 also marks the 100th Anniversary of the Remembrance Poppy in Canada. Madame Anna Guerin came up with idea of distributing the poppy as a way to raise money for veterans' needs and to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War. In July 1921 the Great War Veterans Association adopted the poppy as the flower of Remembrance.
