Canucks Autism Network (CAN) provides 16 weekly virtual programs.

Prince George children, youth, and adults on the autism spectrum can now get an iPad loaned to them for free that includes monthly data.

Through an application process, the Canucks Autism Network (CAN) program, in collaboration with Sources Community Resource Centres (Sources), is intended to help local families with the technology required to participate in online social and recreational programs.

Since 2017, CAN has provided autism training and developed relationships across northern B.C. region and in response to COVID-19, it has launched 16 weekly virtual programs delivered in real-time over Zoom.

They range from sports and recreation, art, science and social opportunities for children, youth and adults on the autism spectrum.

The new online programs will allow families in Prince George to directly experience CAN’s programs and the new iPad loan program aims to help even more families in the region access the programing.

“COVID-19 has been very difficult for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families,” said CAN VP Stephanie Jull, PhD, BCBA-D.

“With the support of Sources, we are excited to reach more children, youth and adults on the autism spectrum in Prince George than ever before.”

Financially boosted by Canada’s Emergency Community Support Fund and Community Foundations of Canada, CAN provides families with use of an iPad Mini equipped with monthly data and registration in weekly virtual programs at no cost.

Families who already have their own device and internet access are also welcome to sign up for CAN’s virtual programs.

“The work of the Canucks Autism Network aligns with our mission at Sources to promote social wellness in communities, including the 376 clients and families we served in northern B.C. last year,” adds Sources CEO David Young.

“We are thrilled to support their outstanding efforts to extend their impact to the autism community in our region.”

In addition to Prince George, the program is also being delivered with the additional support of Kitimat DisABILITY Resources and Christine Danroth, a CAN parent and community partner in Prince Rupert.

Virtual programs are ongoing throughout winter, spring and summer 2021, and iPad loans will continue year-round.
