As the snow looks like it’s here to stay, for now, crews with the City of Prince George are currently conducting snow and ice control operations.

According to a release, trucks and sidewalk machines are deployed this morning (Oct. 19) clearing roads and sidewalks, and crews are also using de-icing and traction material on priority routes, intersections and hills.

The city says snow and ice control operations will continue into the afternoon and overnight with plowtrucks and sidewalk machines.

Because of the recent snowfall, crews have also begun seasonal park closures at select parks and outdoor civic facilities.

The gates at entrances to Connaught Hill are closed to traffic, and the outdoor public washrooms at Duchess and Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Parks are also closed, as is Masich Place Stadium and its track.

Snow clearing also means you may have to move your vehicle to allow the plows to clear the roads.

The city is reminding motorists that parking restrictions are in effect from Oct. 15 to April 15 each year to help with snow operations:

  • On-street parking is prohibited from midnight to 7 a.m. downtown
  • On-street parking is prohibited from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Priority One roads and hills, the Hospital District, and a number of other designated roads
  • On-street parking is prohibited from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in residential areas. Parking on the side of the street with odd house numbers is permitted from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. unless otherwise posted
  • Illegally parked vehicles are subject to a $50 ticket per offence and/or may be towed

The city explains plowing around parked vehicles can slow down operations and create hazards for other vehicles by creating windrows in the street.

More information about the city’s snow and ice control operations can be found on the city’s website.
