This year’s Prince George Spruce Kings are on the brink of shattering another team record since joining the B.C. Hockey League (BCHL) in 1996.
On Monday (Feb. 18), the Spruce Kings recorded its 37th win of the 2018-19 season with a 4-2 victory over the Eagles in Surrey, which ties the most single-season wins in franchise history.
Prince George also got to 37 wins in the 1998-99 season; that year, they finished the 60-game schedule with a record of 37-20-0-3.
In the franchise’s 45-year history, the most wins ever accumulated was 44 in the 1981-82 season when they were a part of the Peace-Cariboo Junior Hockey League (PCJHL).
The Spruce Kings are coming off a road-trip split in the Mainland Division having also lost their contest in Chilliwack on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 17).
The now league season-champion Chiefs defeated the red, white, and blue by a close 2-1 score.
Forward Dustin Manz recorded a combined four points in both games (two goals, two assists) and now leads Prince George with 68 points.
He’s also tied for third in the BCHL for most points.
Ben Brar added another goal to his stat sheet in the Surrey game, potting his team-leading 33rd of the season.
Goaltender Logan Neaton was 1-1 this long weekend, stopping 11 of 13 shots in the Chilliwack loss and 21 of 23 against Surrey for his 31st win of the year.
The split solidifies Prince George a second-place finish in the BCHL’s Mainland Division and home-ice advantage at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena (RMCA) to start the playoffs.
Before the post-season, the Spruce Kings have only two games, both at the RMCA this Friday (Feb. 22) and Saturday (Feb. 23) against Chilliwack with 7 p.m. puck-drops.
If they can muster a weekend sweep, they will get to 23 home wins, which would be the most recorded in a single season in team history dating back to the 2003-04 season (the last known home record on BCHL.ca).
