Prince George city council has approved an expansion to the city’s transit plan that will see more express services and three more buses on the road.
The plan first came up at city council two weeks ago at the June 10 meeting. It was one of the options presented in the Transit Expansion Initiatives Memorandum of Understanding, but council differed the issue to the finance and audit committee to examine the $256,000 price tag.
The committee recommended going through with the plan saying it was the most suitable direction for the Prince George transit system.“It’s a far superior choice and the business case makes more sense,” said Coun. Garth Frizzell at Monday's (June 24) regular council meeting.
The proposal would see an increase in annual service hours and the procurement of three new buses, which will be leased by B.C. Transit and on the road in September 2020.
This also means they’ll be an additional 4,000 annual service hours from the base service levels – which is a 4.6 per cent increase.
These additional hours would be used to provide peak service hour expansions, including express transit services to the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) and College of New Caledonia (CNC).
There’s going to be new limited stop round trips from downtown to UNBC and new limited stop round trips from downtown to CNC via Spruceland.
The plan also includes off-peak, weekend and evening timing, and routing improvements as needed.
The expansion is estimated to increase revenue by $71,136.
