Prince George has now been upgraded from a severe thunderstorm watch to a severe thunderstorm warning.
Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a line of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain.
This line is 40 km southwest of the city of Prince George and is slowly moving towards the city at 20 km/h. The government agency warns that heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads and large hail can damage property and cause injury.
11 a.m.
After thunder and lightning last night, Prince George is under another severe thunderstorm watch.
A local resident also captured yesterday’s lightning show on video around 9 p.m. on Douglas Street which lit up the sky.
Environment Canada says conditions are once again favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, damaging hail and torrential rain.
Very large hail can damage property, break windows, dent vehicles and cause serious injury. Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.
The government agency warns that lightning kills and injures Canadians every year so remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
The city is also under a special air quality statement due to wildfire smoke impacting the region or the next 24 to 48 hours.
