Two Prince George used oil collectors are being honoured with an award for their performance throughout 2021.
BC Used Oil Management Association (BCUOMA), a not-for-profit group dedicated to the collection and recycling of used lubricating oil, oil filters, oil containers, used antifreeze and antifreeze containers in British Columbia announced the winners of their third annual Top Collector Awards.
Jepson Petroleum Ltd. and Foothills Boulevard Regional Landfill made the list for the top 30 public recycling centres in B.C.
“Over the past two years, the pandemic has significantly affected how our used oil recycling centres have been able to operate their businesses. However, I’m extremely proud at how resilient they have been during these challenging times and how well they have continued to provide their customers with safe, easy to use, and convenient facilities where they can return their used oil and antifreeze materials,” said David Lawes, CEO, BC Used Oil Management Association.
Used oil can be re-refined into new lubricating oil or material inputs for manufacturing or energy products and used oil filters contain metal, which is recycled into metal products like rebar, nails, and wire.
Used oil and antifreeze containers are also recycled and used to manufacture new oil containers, drainage tiles, and parking curbs. Used antifreeze is refined and reused as new automotive antifreeze.
“Our top collectors went above and beyond by upgrading their infrastructures to make collection more environmentally friendly, educating their customers about used oil recycling, installing new informational signage, and promoting used oil and antifreeze recycling in their communities,” said Lawes.
“BCUOMA is honoured to work with such a dedicated group of business owners and managers across British Columbia who are passionate about providing their customers with great service, while also focusing on the environment. These awards are our way of thanking the top collectors in the province for continuing to do an excellent job!”
BCUOMA’s criteria for being a top public recycling centre collector includes the total amount of used oil, oil filters, oil containers, antifreeze and antifreeze containers collected at the public recycling location; the total number of years participating in BCUOMA’s public recycling program; and a demonstration of continued support of BCUOMA and other recycling stewardship related programs.
