The Jon Bragg Memorial Tournament brings the best senior boys volleyball teams from across the north to Prince George for the annual prestigious event.
The College Heights Cougars have won both local tournaments in the 2019 season thus far and came into this past weekend fifth in the provincial ‘AA’ rankings.
However, their hopes of going undefeated in a second straight competition and defending Jon Bragg’s trophy fell short as Centennial Christian held off the host school, winning in three very close sets (25-23, 22-25, 15-13).
The Seahawks, based out of Terrace, only lost one game in the preliminary round and it was to the Cougars, again in three sets, finishing second in pool play.
Even more impressive, Centennial Christian is a ‘A’ school provincially, but they’ve been neck and neck in local tournaments against College Heights.
At the D.P. Todd tournament in September, it was CHSS prevailing over the Seahawks in straight sets and both teams were undefeated going into the final.
Centennial produced two all-stars from the Jon Bragg Memorial, including Jacob Ringma and Ben Mantel, while the host Cougars’ Eli Woldringh was named to the team.
There were nine teams that participated on the weekend, which consisted of six Prince George-based schools.

The College Heights Cougars and the Duchess Park Condors senior boys are set to compete in the Best of the West tournament at Kelowna Secondary Oct. 17 to 19.
