The United Way of Northern B.C. (UWNBC) staff and volunteers from the property company the Kelson Group are rebuilding a deck at Phoenix Transition House.
The repairs which include rebuilding a composite deck and baluster railing and garden clean-up are part of the United Way’s Day of Caring events.
Throughout the year, the United Way hosts Day of Caring events where companies, community groups, or non-profits can take part and lend a hand.
“We are so grateful to get this deck done, and it will be good to have the moms and kids enjoying the outdoor space we have for them. We cannot thank United Way Northern BC enough for their perseverance on this project. It has been over two years in the waiting. They have been fantastic and coordinated everything,” said Karen Underhill of the Phoenix Transition Society.
UWNBC has not been able to organize Day of Caring projects due to volunteer safety concerns and has instead partnered with the Kelson Group to be able to help Phoenix Transition Society construct a new deck in the backyard of their transition house for the children to play and enable safe access to the backyard for the delivery of their programs.
“This is my first time working with United Way Northern BC here in Prince George. I am new to the Kelson Group, and it's our absolute pleasure to be completing this project for Phoenix Transition Society,” said Morgan Kofoed, Property Manager, Kelson Group.
“Our organization shares a deep commitment to helping our community, and it is our privilege to step forward with a donation, expertise, and skills to complete this project. United Way Northern BC has made it easy for us to participate by organizing and coordinating the day. We look forward to the impact the deck will have in the community.”
Pheonix Transition House provides shelter for women of all ages and cultural backgrounds and their children who are at risk of violence or have experienced violence. While staying in the shelter women have access to individual and group counselling, substance use counselling, physical and mental health resources, life skills education, and advocacy.
“United Way of Northern BC is thrilled to connect these incredible organizations to help our local community and the people we serve. The Phoenix Transition Society does such critical work to support some of our most vulnerable, so it’s an honour to be able to coordinate this Day of Caring for them,” said Trista Spencer, executive eirector, United Way of Northern BC.
“A huge thank you to the Kelson Group for once again coming forward in such a big way to make sure this agency has a space that is both safe and effective for their clients and programming needs. It’s wonderful to see this come together!”
