School recently earned a promotion to Canada's top level of collegiate athletics

A Prince George teen earned a new suit of armour and still has a year left of development before venturing into battle.

Brooklyn Hutchings has committed to Trinity Western University (TWU) and it's women's hockey program for the 2022-23 season.

The 16-year-old's signing with the Langley post-secondary was confirmed this morning (April 16).

She was a top-five scorer with the Northern Capitals in 2019-20, which was the last full season for the Prince George under-18 AAA female squad before COVID-19 cancelled the current year.

Hutchings, a left-handed forward, averaged more than a half-point per game that campaign for a total 18 points in 32 contests, which included six goals and 12 assists.

The Caps would go on to finish third in the regular-season standings.

A season earlier, in 2018-19, she was on the Prince George Girls U-16 Tier 1 Cougars, but acted an an affiliated player for the Northern Capitals when needed.

Hutchings earned a spot on the team the following year after a pair of impressive outings, scoring two goals in two games.

She'll join TWU at the Canada West level in 2022, which is the country's highest level of college athletics.

The Spartans' men's and women's hockey teams were granted a promotion to U SPORTS in 2019, and were set to start in 2020-21 but was cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, following health and safety protocols, the TWU women played five exhibition matches against Delta Hockey Academy and Rink Hockey Academy (Kelowna) in October last year, finishing with a 2-3 record.

Prior to joining Canada West, the Spartans competed for seven seasons in the South Coast Women's Hockey League (SCWHL).

They claimed fourth in the 2019-20 season with a 25-game record fo 10-10-5.
