Cedars Christian is one of the first schools in northern B.C. to experience a COVID-19 exposure event in the month of February.
Northern Health says students and staff at the Prince George independent school may have come in contact with someone who recently tested positive for the virus on Feb. 1.
Unless contacted by public health officials, the community is being asked to monitor symptoms for 14 days.
This is the second time Cedars Christian has been alerted for an exposure event.
Its first was Dec. 14-16, 2020, with the self-monitoring period ending before the new year.
Since students returned to the classroom in September, 19 Prince George-based schools have experienced at least one COVID-19 exposure event, including three independent or private schools and 16 SD57 members.
Meanwhile, three Prince Rupert schools have been informed of February exposures, including Port Edward Elementary (Feb. 1), Pineridge Elementary (Feb. 3) and Conrad Elementary (Feb. 3).
Northern Health's school-exposure section explains students should still go to school "if you do not receive a phone call or letter from Public Health," but you're also encouraged to monitor symptoms daily.
- Contact tracing is initiated to determine how the individual was infected and who they were in close contact with
- We identify and notify close contacts who may be at an increased risk, and advise them to self-isolate and monitor for symptoms for 14 days
- Only Public Health can determine who is a close contact
- Learning groups, friends or other connections may not be determined to be a close contact
- Public Health staff works closely with the school and school district throughout the case and contact management process to maintain close communication with the school community

As of this publication, Northern Health has recorded 3,812 COVID-19 cases since March last year, which included 131 new infections from this past weekend.
Sadly, two more people in the region succumbed to the virus, raising the authority's death toll to 87.
There are also currently 411 active COVID-19 cases in the north, per the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), 11 people in critical care among 14 total hospitalizations, and 3,289 recoveries.
