The much-needed Mausoleum Expansion project at Prince George's Memorial Park Cemetery is now complete.
Currently, there are more than 100 residents on the wait-list to enter the cremated remains of their loved ones in the city.
Last year, city council approved the addition of the approximately 1,200 sq-ft. building onto the existing facility, including 900 new glass and marble front niches due to the increasing popularity of cremation in recent years.
The original facility’s 500 niches have been at capacity since 2014.
The city says the project was also completed on schedule and under budget.
According to a recent staff report, the project budget was $1.4 million while the final project expenditure totals $1.3 million, which includes all remaining work such as landscaping, irrigation, and the installation of increased security features.
The following final additions are scheduled to be completed by the summer:
- Vaulted timber-frame ceiling
- Large windows offering abundant natural lighting
- Enhanced safety features such as improved lighting and security systems
The cemetery also has new burial options including an environmentally conscious green burial section with a scattering garden and ossuary.
Memorial Park Cemetery is situated on 50 hectares of land at the intersection of Highway 16 and Ferry Avenue
Niche sales officially started on Monday, March 15. Interested residents are asked to contact the Cemetery Administration for further information.
