Prince George’s World Para Nordic Skiing Championships up for national award

Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance nominates city’s 2019 event

More than a year ago, Prince George saw the world’s best para-athletes take the Otway slopes representing their country in a critical step towards the next Winter Paralympics.

The 2019 World Para Nordic Skiing Championships were a rousing success for the northern capital and has now been nominated for a national honour for its tourism movement locally and internationally.

The Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance (CSTA) has shortlisted the Prince George event for its yearly awards, putting up the Championships for its International Sport Event of the Year.

More specifically, the 2019 World Para Nordics are among three in the tournament category with a budget of more than $2 million.

The competition saw approximately 140 athletes from 20 different nations, over 200 coaches and officials come to B.C.’s north as part of the follow-up from the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea.

Canada earned a total of 10 medals from the Prince George Championships, racking up two gold, six silver, and two bronze.

“It was absolutely amazing to see our community, and our club and our people shine so brightly on the world stage,” said Kevin Pettersen, Chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee. 

“I am so thankful to all of the nations and the guests that [came to] experience the magic of Prince George and all we have to offer.”

The other nominees include the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships in Vancouver and Victoria, and the Grands Prix Cyclistes de Québec et de Montréal.

In 2016, Prince George won two CSTA awards for hosting the 2015 Canada Winter Games, including Canadian Sport Event of the Year.
