A proposed hotel project sailed through the public hearing process Monday night, leaving only one more vote of council to bring it to fruition.

An application for the 243-room Pomeroy Hotel to be situated behind the Prince George Playhouse received third reading during Monday's city council meeting. The city owns part of the 2.15 hectare property along with the Prince George Golf and Curling Club and is applying for a site-specific rezoning from parks and recreation and major institutional to a regional commercial zone. A restrictive covenant limiting the land's use for recreational purposes would also be lifted.

Preliminary designs for the hotel showcase two four-storey hotels fronting Recplace Drive connected via a one-storey pool and fitness facility.

Coun. Brian Skakun expressed a desire to see a project like this go downtown, but called the Pomeroy proposal an "exciting development."
