Quesnel seeks Prince George’s support for stalled Highway 97 Interconnector project

Quesnel is asking the City of Prince George to support its Highway 97 North-South Interconnector Project.

The interconnector is a bypass type project which the city of Quesnel says will provide significant benefits to the region and anyone travelling or shipping goods either north or south on Highway 97 through Quesnel.

Traffic currently bottle necks in downtown Quesnel and the interconnector plan completely rethinks the city’s downtown traffic flows.

Most heavy truck traffic will be gone from downtown Quesnel, reducing downtown traffic congestion, and improving safety outcomes, and seven traffic lights would be bypassed.

The scope of the project encompasses a 3.7 km section of Highway 97 through the downtown of Quesnel and would include two new structures to replace the Quesnel River Bridge and Quesnel Rail Crossing.

However, the city of Quesnel said this project has been on hold by the province due to other local and provincial road priorities which took precedence over the interconnector.

The goal of Quesnel city council is to get this project back into the provincial capital project queue, as it has already undergone the feasibility phases and the business case analysis.

Quesnel is requesting that the city of Prince George pass a resolution in support of the Quesnel Highway 97 North-South Interconnector Project or, prepare a letter of support.

Prince George City Council will discuss the project and the resolution at its next council meeting on Monday Aug. 28.
