Raise a Reader funds distributed to local literacy projects

The local Raise a Reader program has issued $23,000 to 19 organizations for projects that provide literacy skills for children and families in Prince George. The funds were raised during Raise a Reader Day held last Sept.

The local Raise a Reader program has issued $23,000 to 19 organizations for projects that provide literacy skills for children and families in Prince George.

The funds were raised during Raise a Reader Day held last Sept. 28 from sponsorships and donations from people who were offered a special edition of the Prince George Citizen.

Polaris Montessori school will get a grant to offset costs of the school's partnership with REAPS salmon spawning project. The school will host a talk with local author Clayton Gauthier and each Kindergarten to Grade 2 student will get a copy of his book called The Salmon Run.

The local branch of the CNIB of B.C. will get funds to provide those with vision loss with assistive technology.

Other organizations getting funds include Ecole College Heights, Heritage elementary, Ecole Heather Park elementary, Nukko Lake elementary, Ron Brent elementary, Peden Hill elementary, Prince George Public Library, PG Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Blackburn elementary, Southridge elementary, Spruceland Traditional school,

St. Mary's school, Sacred Heart school, Learning Differences Centre of B.C., Quinson elementary, Prince George Native Friendship Centre and the YMCA.

The local fundraising campaign to encourage literacy is presented by the Prince George Public Library, Literacy Prince George and The Prince George Citizen.

Since 2007, more than $325,000 has been distributed locally.
