The Caledonia Ramblers have set their hiking schedule for the summer, and a series of easy family-friendly hikes are part of it.
The first will be held this Saturday at the Swampy trail loop in the Cranbrook Hill Greenway. (Meet at the Greenway parking lot behind UNBC at 11 a.m.)
For all but October, two will be held each month, always on a Saturday, and are open to all ages.
"Many of these trails are known only by a few people, especially those that are informal, so families with children may avoid them for fear of getting lost or animal encounters," club president Nowell Senior said.
"The Ramblers hike in groups and know these trails, which re-assures individuals and families with children while providing a sense of safety."
The club is also open to hosting more strenuous Saturday hikes and dog-friendly hikes, depending on interest.
The regular schedule of Sunday hikes begins with a trip to Fort George Canyon on May 7. Meet at the city hall parking lot at 8:30 a.m. Car pool fee is $4.
A combination of day hikes and overnight trips follow. Most are rated easy or moderate with more strenuous trips scheduled for late August to early October.
Overnight trips include Eagle Valley, June 17-18, Ozalenka, July 1-3, Kamloops, Aug. 4-7, and Avalanche Pass, Sept. 2-4. Participants in these trips must be paid-up members.
Club membership is $30 per year plus $7 for each additional family member. Newcomers get two free day trips before deciding whether to join.
Participants are also required to be appropriately equipped with the proper footwear, clothing, food, drink and backpack.
