A recall petition against Peace River North Liberal MLA Dan Davies has failed, Elections BC announced on Wednesday.
The petition was launched on Feb. 3 by Joseph Wayne Bell and 23 voters registered as canvassers to collect signatures. However, the recall petition was not submitted to Elections BC by the April 4 deadline established in the Recall and Initiative Act.
In his application to launch the recall petition, Bell said Davies failed to communicate with constituents through the media, emails and community meetings.
“When invited to such meetings to answer questions or give clarity (Davies) was visibly absent or (didn’t provide) any follow up,” Bell wrote. “When approached individually by constituents or small groups again no follow up or a form letter was used. His choosing to ignore their concerns in such matters often allowed the passing of, or changes to Legislation detrimental to the Constituents in his riding there allowing them to have no input.”
For the recall petition to be successful, the canvassers would have needed to get 10,487 signatures by the April 4 deadline, according to Elections BC. Since the legislation came into effect in 1995, there have been 29 recall petitions and none have been successful.
Davies was first elected in 2017 and reelected in 2020. He currently serves as shadow minister for social development and poverty reduction.
