Site preparation works have begun for a planned $505,000 secure parking upgrade for the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George’s downtown office.

The office is located at 155 George St., immediately beside the Millennium Park encampment at George Street and First Avenue. In April, the encampment had begun to spread from the park, owned by the City of Prince George, to the regional district office lawn.

As of Wednesday, the regional district lawn area had been fenced off and equipment was on site clearing the area.

“Actual cost and firm timeline will not be known until the competitive bid process is concluded but we are hoping the project will be wrapped up by late fall,” a regional district spokesperson said in an email on Wednesday.

The regional district board of directors approved sole-sourcing the engineering and project management for the project to Stantec Consulting Ltd. at its regular May 18 meeting. Regional district CAO Jim Martin said the plan would see the lawn in front of the building completely fenced in and converted into a secure parking area with controlled access for staff.

Funding for the capital project was included in the district’s 2023 budget.
