A major local fundraiser, the Prince George Relay for Life, has become the Relay at Home during the global coronavirus pandemic.

The Canadian Cancer Society's fundraiser will take place across the country as always but this time local relay participants won't come together as planned on June 13 at CN Centre for Canada's only 24-hour relay but will unite virtually from 4 to 6 p.m. instead.

Participants will see all the important components of the relay, including the Survivor Celebration and Luminary Ceremony but this year they can tune in from home.

"We are always humbled by the amount of support Relay for Life receives in Prince George," Aimee Cassie, coordinator of the Prince George event, said.

"It is an incredible community event which has a direct impact to people across Northern BC and something we can all be incredibly proud of. Though it will look very different this year, that doesn't mean its impact will be any less."

For entertainment that usually takes place throughout the event people can enjoy performances by Brett Kissel, Paul Langlois from The Tragically Hip, Virginia to Vegas, Joel Plaskett, The Reklaws, Peter Katz and versaCello.

Following the broadcast participants are encouraged to walk their neighborhoods and organizers are asking teams to display their team signs to showcase their cause.

Funds raised will support ground-breaking research and a national support system that helps people living with cancer and their families, including those in Prince George.

The virtual event will stream on the Facebook page, Relay For Life Prince George, as well as YouTube.

Registration is free and everyone is welcome to join by visiting https://www.cancer.ca/en/?region=bc
