REAPS and the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George held their fourth biannual Junk in the Trunk sale at CN Centre on Saturday.

About 50 people brought their used items and sold them out of their vehicles. The event is a fundraiser for REAPS (the Recycling and Environmental Action Planning Society) and helps keep usable items out of the landfill, REAPS executive director Terri McCylmont said.

"Many people come down to our collective garage sale -it's more fun than a regular garage sale with 50 people here selling things," she said. "The vendors like it to, because there is more people than would come to your home."

AiMHI, the Prince George Association for Community Living, was on hand to accept donations of any unsold good through its Common Goods program. Items collected through the program are sold to Value Village, with profits supporting AiMHI's programs supporting children and adults with disabilities.

Regional District of Fraser-Fort George waste diversion program leader Rachael Ryder said the district has supported the Junk in the Trunk sales as a way to encourage people to reuse items rather than throwing them in the trash.

Despite the cool weather, Ryder said she was impressed with the turnout.

"It's been really busy, really from quarter to nine, right up to 11:30 [a.m.] Our section of the parking lot was full," Ryder said.

Bruce Shelkie said he enjoyed coming out to browse.

"[But] I should've brought stuff, I have a lot of junk at home - I don't need more junk," he said.

Seller Danielle Patterson said she heard about the sale while taking part in REAPS community clean up last weekend, and thought it was a good idea.

"I live in a basement suite so I can't have a garage sale at home," she added.
