Nine occupants of a house in the 1400 block of Diefenbaker Drive escaped serious injury after their home burst into flame Saturday morning.
At about 5:30 a.m., firefighters received the call to respond to a blaze that started at the front of the duplex. The residents woke to the sound of fire alarms and a neighbour who pounded on the doors to alert them. Sixteen firefighters from three halls responded and discovered the fire spreading rapidly from the front exterior of the house.
The fire also damaged a second-floor room, a garage and two vehicles. Damage is estimated at between $75,000 and $100,000.
One of the occupants was taken to hospital suffering minor smoke inhalation.
Investigators have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
Fire officials credit the use of smoke detectors installed on all levels of the house for allowing the safe escape of all nine occupants.
