A new Japanese Cooking and Culture course was approved by the board of education at School District No.57 (SD57)’s January board meeting Tuesday.
Japanese Cooking and Culture 11 was approved for the 2024 to 2025 school year, as new Grade 10 to 12 courses need to be either ministry or board authorized to count toward graduation.
The course was developed by Alison McNeil for College Heights Secondary School.
“The course is recommended for students who have interest in Japanese culture and global cuisine and may want to pursue a career in the restaurant industry after completing high school,” states the course rationale.
“Japanese Cooking and Culture is a course that focuses on developing skills and techniques in preparing a variety of Japanese foods in a cultural context. It will examine the interactions with many distinct cultures, and the Japanese attitude towards cultural integration. Through Japanese food, we will also investigate the Japanese attitude towards arts, craftmanship, pop culture, and domesticated international influences.”
The course framework also noted that the foundational skills learning in this course are transferable to other senior foods courses, post-secondary culinary studies, and daily life.
The 4-credit course was approved unanimously by the board.
