There will be a second protest in Prince George as part of the Black Lives Matter movement after 46-year-old George Floyd died after being held down by a police officer’s knee at his neck on May 25.
A series of protests have since taken place in the United States, some resulting in large fires, destruction of businesses and violence, and around the world in solidarity against racism and police brutality.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced yesterday (June 3) that charges against Derek Chauvin had been upgraded from third-degree murder to second-degree murder, court documents show.
Charges were also filed against former Minneapolis police officers J.A. Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao.
The three have been charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
Saturday's (June 6) protest in Prince George was announced by @pg4blm on Instagram.
While details are sparse, the post says the event will start at Noon and will be held at Mr. PG by the Playhouse.
The first protest is scheduled for tomorrow (June 5) organized by the local branch of Fridays for Future, a group founded by teen activist Greta Thunberg and her push for climate change.
It explains in a Facebook post that this will be a peaceful, physically-distanced protest.
Fridays for Future encourages anyone who comes to stay within the group they came with to prevent any potential spread of COVID-19.
The event is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Prince George city hall.
