A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect in Prince George on Monday, July 22, 2024.

Environment Canada has ended a severe thunderstorm warning in addition to two earlier weather alerts.

The weather agency's previously issued severe thunderstorm watch and special air quality statement remain in effect.

"Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, damaging hail and torrential rain," the advisory states.

At the same time, wildfire smoke is in the air.

"Smoke is widespread across the province," states Environment Canada, adding that significant improvements are expected in smoke concentrations over the next 24 hours as westerly winds move across the province moving smoke east.

Smoke may linger in valleys and near active wildfires.

"The fine particles in wildfire smoke pose the main health risk," the special weather statement reads. "People more likely to be impacted by wildfire smoke include seniors, pregnant women and pregnant people, people who smoke, infants and young children, people who work outdoors, people involved in strenuous outdoor exercise and people with an existing illness or chronic health condition. Those who are more likely to be impacted should reduce or reschedule strenuous activities outdoors or seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms."

The heat wave is expected to end as temperatures drop to 10 C with rain Monday night and Tuesday's high being 19 C with a mix of sun and cloud. After an overnight low of 8 C, expect a Wednesday high of 21 C with a chance of showers.
