A man was sentenced Wednesday, Feb. 19 to three days' time served for failing to report under the Sex Offender Information Registration Act (SOIRA).
Keagan Daniel Corrigan, 49, was convicted of sexual assault and sentenced at the Penticton Law Courts in June 2011 to five years, after five years credit for pre-sentence custody. A judge also banned Corrigan from firearms possession for life and added him to the National Sex Offender Registry for life.
In Prince George provincial court, Judge Peter McDermick agreed to the joint Crown and defence submission after Corrigan pleaded guilty to breaching a court order.
Corrigan was supposed to attend a registration centre Oct. 25, 2022 and again on Oct. 25, 2023, but did not do so.
The law says a sexual offender shall report to a registration centre at any time between 11 months and one year after they last reported to a registration centre. The Prince George RCMP detachment acts as a registration centre under SOIRA.
Police were able to locate Corrigan and arrested him on an unendorsed warrant, meaning he was required to go before a judge. McDermick was told that it was Corrigan’s first breach under SOIRA, but he has since reported and is up to date on his obligations.
McDermick said the native of Bella Coola struggles with addiction, but is in a supportive recovery house.
“So the mitigating factors are he's pleaded guilty, and he's doing well and he's taking care of some of the criminogenic factors that led to his offending,” McDermick said.
