Quite fitting that the latest recruit for women’s soccer at the University of Northern B.C. (UNBC) is from northern B.C.

Cara Brawdy becomes the first 2020 commit for the Timberwolves in Canada West action, signing with the Prince George post-secondary yesterday (Oct. 2) while in her final year of high school in Smithers.

After attending identification camp at UNBC this past summer, the Bulkley Valley Soccer Society product believes she’s ready to make the jump to a higher level of competition in western Canada.

“Having people who wanted to play as hard and as much as I did was really cool,” said Brawdy in a team release. “It was about getting better as a team and as a whole. [...] I love to play the game. I think it brings people together. It is a sport that everyone can have a part in, being able to work hard on and off the pitch, and really contribute to the team atmosphere.”

Brawdy is a five-foot-six midfielder that Lady T-Wolves Head Coach Neil Sedgewick claims to be athletically fit for the pitch, along with a physical and mental approach that could make her an impact player for the green and gold.

“I am extremely excited to have Cara join the program in 2020,” he said. “She is a strong athlete who is committed to her personal development. From our interactions in Prospects Camps, I have seen her take the messaging and show immediate growth. I am looking forward to the years ahead.”

The 17-year-old Brawdy also believes she can bring a kind of dedication to soccer no else can, crediting her small-town upbringing.

“I bring a lot of hard work. I haven’t come from much, but I think it’s going to be really good. With the coaching, I am going to be able to improve a lot, and that is my goal.”

She’s set to graduate from Smithers Secondary in June and will enrol in Human Resource Management while attending UNBC.

The Timberwolves are currently 3-2-3 in the 2019 campaign.

This weekend is the final homestand for the women's soccer team, taking on the undefeated Trinity Western Spartans Friday (Oct. 4) at 6 p.m. and will face the UFV Cascades on Sunday (Oct. 6) at 12 p.m.
