Northern Health has cited more COVID-19 exposure events at four Prince George elementary schools this afternoon (Dec. 21), including two new SD57 institutions.
Southridge and Pinewood have both been added to the list of regional schools marked for the virus for the first time, along with a fourth for Heather Park Elementary and a second for Westwood Elementary.
Southridge students and staff may have come into contact with someone who tested positive for the virus on Dec. 10, and Northern Health explains the self-monitoring period formally ends on Thursday (Dec. 24).
At Pinewood, the dates are Dec. 14 and 15 for potential exposure, with its self-monitoring window ending Dec. 29.
The new dates for the other two schools are as follows:
- Heather Park Elementary = Dec. 11, 2020 = Self-monitoring ends Dec. 25
- Westwood Elementary = Dec. 9, 2020 = Self-monitoring ends Dec. 23
Students in Prince George began winter break on Friday afternoon (Dec. 18).
Earlier today (Dec. 21), St. Mary's Catholic School was flagged a fourth time for COVID-19 exposure from Dec. 8 to 11.
Students and staff at the independent facility began winter break two days earlier as a result of the three previous exposure events and 'staffing shortages.'
Northern Health's school-exposure section explains students should still go to school "if you do not receive a phone call or letter from Public Health," but you're also encouraged to monitor symptoms daily.
- Contact tracing is initiated to determine how the individual was infected and who they were in close contact with
- We identify and notify close contacts who may be at an increased risk, and advise them to self-isolate and monitor for symptoms for 14 days
- Only Public Health can determine who is a close contact
- Learning groups, friends or other connections may not be determined to be a close contact
- Public Health staff works closely with the school and school district throughout the case and contact management process to maintain close communication with the school community
