The Canadian Avalanche Centre issued a special public avalanche warning Thursday for the backcountry areas of the Columbia mountains from the US border to south of Prince George.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre issued a special public avalanche warning Thursday for the backcountry areas of the Columbia mountains from the US border to south of Prince George.

The warning also covers the south coast mountains from Pemberton to Lillooet and north--not including the Whistler and Vancouver areas and will last through to Monday.

CAC operations manager John Kelly said there are several weak layers in the upper snowpack, and the weight of a person or a snowmobile will trigger avalanches. The snowpack is now extremely volatile.
