Hugging is a comfort and for nearly 15 months while the pandemic has been ravaging the world it’s been a forbidden practice for people to wrap their arms around somebody from outside their own family bubbles
Now that COVID infection rates are dropping and health restrictions are being lifted people who missed hugging loved ones are now able to do that again.
That’s given the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation incentive to launch its Hugs for Healthcare campaign in recognition of the important roles healthcare workers have played in their work to efforts to contain the pandemic.
Their charitable group, which provides hospital equipment at UHNBC, is encouraging everyone to give a hug to those they can see as a tribute to those who have lost their lives in the pandemic and to the healthcare workers who risked their own health in the fight against the virus.
Hugs for Healthcare participants are invited to create their own Hug Jar and use it collect a token donation of money. It can be a little or a lot, and on Dec. 1 participants will be asked to bring the money collected to the Spirit of the North Healthcare office at 1475 Edmonton St.
“Healthcare has played a vital role during the pandemic, which is why this campaign is so special, as we celebrate connections with our loved ones,” said Judy Neiser, CEO of Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation. “No amount is too small and all participants will be able to direct their efforts to the areas that resonate most with them. This includes designations that felt a heightened impact over the past 14 months, including supporting our littlest patients in pediatrics, seniors who are our most vulnerable, and mental health and wellness services that have been at the forefront.”
One-time donations will also be accepted at the Spirit of the North office or online at spiritofthenorth.ca. All who take part in the promotion are eligible for a draw for a free brunch at Northern Lights Estate Winery.
