UPDATE: Strong winds result in 7,300 Prince George BC Hydro customers without power

Prince George airport experienced 90 km/h winds

Thousands of Prince George residents appear to be without power as a result of some very strong winds today (Jan. 19).

BC Hydro says more than 7,300 customers have been impacted in several regions of the city and its surrounding areas.

Earlier winds, predicted to reach 70 km/h by Environment Canada, came rolling through and even got up to 90 km/h around 2 p.m. at the Prince George airport.

The gusts knocked down trees and wires leading to the outages, and BC Hydro expects some to stay in the dark longer than expected.

"Strong winds have caused extensive damage in the Central Interior, with the hardest hit area being Prince George," the company explains in an update this afternoon.

"Crews have been working through the day and will continue working on repairs to damaged equipment into the evening but we anticipate some customers to be without power overnight."
