Northern Health has issued a toxic drug alert for Prince George following a surge in overdoses linked to two dangerous substances.

Authorities have identified a brown substance sold as fentanyl and a purple drug marketed as "down" as major contributors to the spike in overdoses in the region.

The purple drug has been found to contain a potent combination of benzodiazepines and xylazine, which are known to cause rapid, heavy, and prolonged sedation.

Overdoses have occurred when individuals smoked or injected the substances. Anyone witnessing an overdose is urged to call 911 immediately.

In response to the alert, Northern Health is urging the public to take extra precautions and follow key safety guidelines to reduce the risk of overdose:

  • Overdose Prevention: Complete overdose prevention, recognition, and response training, and always carry naloxone.
  • Avoid Using Alone: Make a plan to have someone nearby who can call for help if needed. For those who must use alone, download the Lifeguard or BeSafe apps, or call the National Overdose Response Service (NORS) at 1-888-688-6677.
  • Know Your Limits: If you are feeling unwell or have reduced your substance use, take a smaller amount, as your tolerance may be lower.
  • Avoid Mixing Substances: If possible, do not mix drugs or combine them with alcohol.
  • Test First: Always test a small amount of any substance before using more.
  • Use at an Overdose Prevention Site (OPS): There are several OPS locations in the community, where trained staff are available to assist in case of an overdose.

In addition to the alert, Northern Health encourages people to utilize local harm reduction services, which include needle exchange programs, drug testing and mobile harm reduction supplies.

The Prince George Harm Reduction Clinic, located at 277 George St., offers services Monday through Saturday as well as on Sundays by request. The clinic also provides mobile harm reduction services via the wellness or outreach truck from 7 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. daily.

Two Doors Down at 1126 3rd Ave. also offers OPS services and drug checking from Wednesday to Saturday, and provides a safe space for people who use drugs.

The alert is in effect until Dec. 6.
