The mayoral and city council candidates were asked to reply to four questions that we hope will give voters a better idea on where they stand on some of the most challenging issues of the day.
1. The current city council voted 5-4 to keep Pine Valley. If this matter were to come before council again, how would you vote and why?
1. Yes, vibrant communities offer a healthy balance of both economic and social opportunities for all citizens. Parks, recreation, the arts, libraries and education lead to a healthy community, economic growth and social change. This is of vital importance for reducing violence, attracting new corporate and residential citizens and fostering overall community well-being. I advocate continued support of protected parks, green spaces and recreation facilities in Prince George.
2. City council voted 8-1 in favour of the Northern Recovery Centre for Women in the former Haldi Road elementary school. How would you have voted and why? (Incumbents: how did you vote and why?)
2. No, Accountability and Transparency is required for real change; it begins with elected officials and extends to all City staff. I will ensure that I am accountable and transparent through consistent communication in person and online; personal declaration of any real or perceived conflict of interest and recommendation that other City staff and councilors do the same; support referendums for major issues; and advocate for fewer in-camera meetings. Poor communication and lack of transparency caused a divide between the city and Haldi Road residence which led to city defending itself in court.
3. The current city council gave its bargaining committee a target of a net-zero increase to negotiate a new collective agreement with city workers, leading to the first-ever labour disruption by municipal staff. What will be your recommendation when the current collective agreements for city workers expire in 2016 and why?
3. I will encourage City Hall to ensure that City staff are engaged, respected and provided meaningful opportunity to make suggestions and otherwise provide input. Successful organizations will tell you their most valuable assets are their employees and the city should take the same approach. I believe that negotiations should be in good faith in which healthy dialogue will allow a settlement that both parties believes is fair and equitable. By starting the process as adversarial, respect on both sides quickly evaporates causing unnecessary hard feelings and low morale.
4. Why should residents vote in the Nov. 15 municipal election?
4. Real Change for a Sustainable Future can become a reality by voting for progressive candidates who have the City of Prince George at heart. I will encourage Community Engagement as it is vital to a healthy exchange of ideas and a supportive and welcoming atmosphere will be cultivated at Council meetings and events. I will stay engaged by hosting regular "Coffee with a Councillor" sessions to hear concerns, listen to ideas, develop relationships and answer questions from my fellow Prince Georgians. There are new candidates able to change the direction of the city for the better.
