Christmas is just around the corner, and Trinity United Church has been working hard to pack, wrap, and distribute Christmas shoeboxes to those in need in Prince George .
The shoeboxes will be filled with socks, hats, mitts, toiletries and Christmas treats, all packed with the help of more than 100 church members and community volunteers.
Sharing shoeboxes has been a tradition for Trinity United Church, which handed them out from a bus before they had a permanent location.
“It's a piece I look forward to every year ... I think there are times we give a box to somebody and we know it's the only gift, the only expression of care that somebody is going to receive,” said Rev. Dr. Bob K. Fillier. “The way folks receive it and the gratitude that is expressed for this simple shoebox wrapped in Christmas paper is a thousand times more than the value of what's in it. You would have thought you handed them precious gems.”
The shoeboxes will be on display under the tree at Trinity United this Sunday, Dec. 8 during service before being handed out by members of the congregation at St. Vincent's afterward.
Anyone interested in dropping off shoeboxes for the congregation and the community can do so on Wednesday, Dec. 11 and Thursday, Dec. 12 between 9 a.m. and noon. Further information can be found on the Trinity United Church website, trinitypg.ca.
