High school students are invited to UNBC today to feel out the campus and get a flavour of university life.
It's the first of the UNBC open houses for prospective students, grades 10 to 12, which are timed with School District 57's professional development days.
"It just gives them a general feel for university life," says Pam Flagel, associate registrar at UNBC.
But the day isn't just about playacting: some lucky students can even expect a same-day letter of offer. Senior students can meet with admissions to see if they qualify while some will opt for admission on the spot.
This time around, prospective students can get a taste of four subjects by professors in that field: from the ecohealth-inspired "You Are What You Eat," to discussions of mental health in rural and northern communities, and available careers in physics, to a chemistry talk playfully titled "The Chemistry of Love."
Each lecture is 30 minutes, with a focus on the fun and informative, says Flagal, adding the day should stretch from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
After the morning "interactive and entertaining" talks, the free event features a lunch at the dining hall, with a veritable smorgasbord of choices. With bellies full, participants will meet current UNBC students during a mini fair.
Those interested can report to the Student Recruitment Office on Student Services Street between 9:30 and 10 a.m. this morning before the talks begin.
The next open house is slated for Nov. 28.
