The UNBC Timberwolves have landed another top recruit in soccer, this time on the men's side.
Seventeen-year-old goalkeeper Alex Dorschied has committed to the university, starting in the 2019-20 season.
“It’s huge for me to join the Timberwolves. It has been a goal of mine for some time to play at this level, so I am really looking forward to this opportunity," he says in a press release "I am excited to get going, and wish I was there already.”
Dorscheid, a native of Grande Prairie, Alta., currently trains with the Pacific Soccer Institute in Victoria.
He's listed as 6'0" and has all the capabilities to play at the Canada West level, but knows there will also be an adjustment period playing in a different league.
“I think the biggest difference is going to be the speed and physicality of play," he adds in the release. "I am just getting used to things coming faster and harder."
Dorschied paid a visit to UNBC this past fall. He knew the school would be a great fit as he was impressed with the men's program as well as the campus and academic offerings.
He plans to work toward a bachelor of commerce.
“I really like the training environment here," he says. "It is a professional atmosphere, the guys are great, and it’s fun to be around. School-wise, this is the number two-ranked undergraduate university in the country, so it was a good fit for me.”
UNBC men's soccer coach Steve Simonson is excited to welcome the young, athletic goalkeeper to the Timberwolves in the fall.
"Alex is a bright, young goalkeeper and a fantastic fit in our program," he says in the release. "He has an incredibly high personal standard, and he pushes himself to be his best at all times. He joins a great goalkeeping team here with the Timberwolves and we look forward to having him join us in the summer.”
Dorscheid will graduate from Charles Spencer High School in Grade Prairie this summer and join UNBC in late July for Timberwolves training camp.
