While the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) is not closing housing or forcing students to leave, it is encouraging students to move out.

In a COVID-19 update released today (March 15), the school says it strongly encourages students living on campus to move out as soon as possible.

UNBC is actively transitioning away from face-to-face classes and exams to help encourage social distancing. The last day of face-to-face classes is March 18.

“If you have a place to go, please begin to make the appropriate arrangements to move off-campus,” states the update.

Housing staff have been providing support to students, in the foyer of residences Neyoh, Keyoh and the housing office, answering questions regarding the transition. Regular housing office hours will resume on Monday.

The university says move-out guidelines have been sent to all students, which requires submitting a “notice-to-move-out” form to the housing office.

However, because of the circumstances, UNBC is waving the criteria for a refund and the 30-day cancellation fee.

The refund on housing fees will be calculated based on the move-out date indicated on the required form.

Students who submit the move-out form will also be withdrawn from the mandatory meal plan and a pro-rated refund will be issued based on the move-out date.

The Agora Dining Hall will remain open but there will be changes in service delivery.

Why are we strongly encouraging students to leave residence?

We understand social distancing is challenging in a residence setting and this is a key principle in preventing the spread of COVID-19. We want to support prevention in all we do at this time. We also know that it is not an ideal environment for many people if there are no classes to attend.

Why do I have to fill out the notification-of-intent-to-move-out form?

We need to know who needs refunds and what date we are refunding back to. People will have very different plans and so this will vary widely between each student in residence. We need a way to ensure you receive the refund that we are offering to you if you choose to leave residence at this time.

What if I want to leave but I’m not sure how to make that happen?

Please email, call or stop in to discuss your situation with housing staff. We would be happy to problem-solve with you to make sure you are where you would prefer to be.

What if I can’t leave at this time?
