UNBC has announced financial compensation for those students affected during recent faculty job action.

The Faculty Association (UNBCFA) began striking on Nov. 7 after no collective agreement was reached with the school.

Back and forth continued between the two sides online, and in the media, before B.C. Labour Minister Harry Bains appointed a special mediator was sent to Prince George to try and close the gap between the two sides.

During the ongoing dispute, UNBC announced on Nov. 23 they would provide some kind of financial compensation to students depending on when and if job action ceased in a certain time frame.

"Upon completion of the strike, UNBC will email students information about the credit, and how it can be accessed," a statement said.

"We recognize that some students may not take up the offer of a non-refundable financial credit. For this reason, UNBC has committed to creating a fund to help future students who are facing financial hardships. The value of this fund will depend on the length of the strike."

The $500 credit is for all students who were enrolled at UNBC as of Nov. 6, 2019.

The credit will be added to a student's account and can be applied as a payment against tuition and fees for the Winter 2020 semester or other balances owing.

"As we previously indicated, UNBC is committed to providing a financial credit to assist students with some of the additional costs and inconvenience incurred during the disruption," UNBC said today (Nov. 19).

If you would like to request a refund form for your account, you are asked to fill out a student refund request form.

"Refund requests are processed weekly, during normal University operating hours and can be disbursed by cheque or direct deposit," the announcement reads

"Cheques will be mailed or, upon request, can be picked up at the University Cashiers Office on the Prince George campus. For direct deposit to your bank account please complete the Direct Deposit Authorization form (for domestic students) or the Outgoing Wire Transfer Banking Information form (for international students)."

UNBC says students can expect to see the credit in an account on, or before, Friday (Dec. 20). If you have questions or concerns, you are asked to email [email protected].
