There are quite a few scenarios in play this weekend (Feb. 1 and 2) when the UNBC Timberwolves host Lethbridge in the last regular season series of the 2018-19 season at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre.
The women have already clinched a Canada West playoff spot, but are also trying to host a home playoff game (Feb. 9), while the men are still fighting to secure one.
The men will clinch a playoff birth if they win one out of the two games Friday and Saturday against the Pronghorns or a single loss by Mount Royal University (MRU) or Thompson Rivers University (TRU).
MRU plays Brandon while TRU faces off against Calgary.
“It feels great to be in playoffs, but the games this weekend are very important," UNBC's Cevanna Carlson says in a news release. "We want to play at home, play on our home court, and be comfortable, playing with our own hoops and our own fans.”
There is little chance however that the men's team will host a home playoff game.
In total, the top 12 teams in each conference (men and women) make the playoffs.
Standings-wise, the women currently sit in seventh with a 10-8 record, while Lethbridge is one place above them in sixth with an 11-7 record.
UNBC allows 72.4 points per game while scoring 77.2; the Pronghorns allow 68.4 points per contest while scoring 73.6.
