Guns were drawn early morning Wednesday when Prince George RCMP arrested two suspects following some tense moments in College Heights.
RCMP said police were conducting patrols in the 7600-block of Gladstone Avenue when, at around 1 a.m., they observed a vehicle leave a home known to have ties to the drug trade.
Upon noticing police, the driver sped away and refused to stop when RCMP activated lights and sirens but then turned into a nearby cul-de-sac and, with nowhere else to go, turned around and headed back toward a stopped RCMP vehicle.
“The suspect vehicle continued to accelerate and rammed into the stopped police car, causing the air bags to deploy and rendering it inoperable. The driver then swerved onto the sidewalk and fled the area,” Cpl. Jennifer Cooper said.
Police flooded the area and found the vehicle abandoned in the 7200-block of St. Lawrence Place. With the help of a police service dog, RCMP said two suspects were founding hiding inside a travel trailer they had broken into.
Police drew their guns during the apprehension and the suspects gave themselves up without further incident.
Charges remained pending approval as of midday Wednesday and the suspects' names were not released. However, RCMP said both are "well known" to police.
It was the second time in less than a week that people associated with the home have been involved in a ramming incident, Prince George RCMP Supt. Shawn Wright said and called the episodes "outright acts of violence against police.”
As of Wednesday, Brent Morgan Jameson remained in custody on four counts, including a charge of endangerment under the Criminal Code, from an incident early Saturday morning in which three police vehicles were rammed in a failed attempt to escape arrest.
Police had attempted to pull over the vehicle he was allegedly driving after noticing it was bearing an expired licence plate.
“While certain aspects of the justice system, such as the detention of offenders and sentencing, are beyond the control of police we will continue to identify and arrest those involved in the illicit drug trade and other criminal activity, doing our part to stop those who demonstrate a wanton disregard for the safety of the public and our officers,” Wright said.
The police officer involved in the collision did not suffer serious injury, RCMP said.
